Child Psychiatry Q & A

What is child and adolescent psychiatry?

To become a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, Dr. Smart graduated from medical school, completed several years in general psychiatry residency, and then several additional years in advanced training that focused on child and adolescent psychiatry.

Dr. Smart’s training certifies him to treat the whole family at Summit Health and Wellness Center, including children, teens, and adults. However, Dr. Smart is one of the very few psychiatrists in the area who primarily devote their time to seeing patients under the age of 25.

What mental health conditions does child psychiatry treat?

Dr. Smart diagnoses and treats the full range of mental health conditions affecting children and adolescents. He has extensive training and experience providing care for conditions such as:

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Autism
  • Sleep problems
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

This list isn’t comprehensive, so call Dr. Smart at Summit Health and Wellness Center if you have any questions about the child psychology services he offers and how he may help your child.

What types of treatment are provided by child psychiatrists?

Dr. Smart approaches child psychology treatment decisions with four key values:

No two patients are the same

Dr. Smart meets the specific needs of each person, customizing treatment plans so that each child or adolescent receives the treatment that supports their goals.

Build upon strengths

When working with children and adolescents, it’s especially important to identify and recognize their strengths, using their abilities to overcome their challenges and build self-esteem.

Talk therapy plays a pivotal role

Therapy is a significant part of treatment. Dr. Smart has years of experience providing therapy for children and adolescents, and he has an extensive toolbox of therapeutic styles and approaches, so he chooses the technique that resonates with each young person’s unique style and needs.

Children and adolescents respond well to many of the same types of therapies used during adult counseling. Some therapies are highly structured, while others take more of a free-flow approach that promotes active participation.

Dr. Smart also offers individual, group, and family counseling, depending on the needs of the patient.

Medication management is essential

Dr. Smart doesn’t believe in over-medicating, taking a less-is-more approach to medicating children. However, it’s also important to acknowledge that certain mental health conditions and severe symptoms benefit from the right medication at the right dose.

To that end, Dr. Smart provides careful and thoughtful medication management when needed to restore a patient’s mental health.
